PLEASE NOTE THE MEETING IS ON THURSDAY AND WILL BE A ZOOM MEETING. Zoom information will be sent to members via email.
Roe is the co-owner of Sweet Briar Flowers, a small farm in Enumclaw, Washington, where she and her husband Sean specialize in hybridizing their own dahlia varieties.
In 2019, Roe and Sean purchased a two-acre farm in the Pacific Northwest, where they began growing flowers and caring for honeybees. In 2021, after the loss of their beloved dog Layla, Roe began saving seeds and intentionally hybridizing dahlias in her honor, a work that has since grown into a focused passion. Today, Roe actively hybridizes new dahlias, participates in dahlia shows, and shares her work by offering dahlia tubers to growers across the country.
For the meeting presentation, Roe will share her journey into breeding dahlias which was a path that began during a season of deep grief after losing our dog, Layla. She will reflect on how gardening became a place of healing, curiosity, and purpose, and how that quiet comfort eventually grew into an intentional breeding practice.
Roe will discuss the hybridization strategies at Sweet Briar Flowers, how they store and evaluate seedlings, and the thoughtful process they use to trial, name, and eventually share new varieties with the public.
This talk will explore themes of loss, patience, creativity, and how something beautiful can grow when we tend both the land and the heart.
